Arise & Shine Health Center offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder at our Glen Burnie, MD clinic, combining FDA-approved medications — Suboxone and Sublocade — with counseling and whole-person support. Our integrated MAT program helps patients reduce cravings, stabilize recovery, and rebuild their lives.
Our Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Options
We offer two proven buprenorphine-based MAT options, prescribed and monitored by our psychiatric providers:
Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone): A daily sublingual film or tablet that dissolves under the tongue. Buprenorphine eases withdrawal symptoms and cravings, while naloxone helps deter misuse. Suboxone is taken at home after an initial induction and stabilization period at our clinic.
Sublocade (buprenorphine extended-release injection): A once-monthly injection administered by our clinical staff. Sublocade delivers a steady level of buprenorphine throughout the month, eliminating the need for daily dosing — a good option for patients who prefer not to take a daily medication or who have had difficulty with daily adherence.

How MAT Works
Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medication with counseling and behavioral therapies. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist: it activates opioid receptors just enough to prevent withdrawal and reduce cravings, without producing the intense euphoria of misused opioids. Because it has a “ceiling effect,” higher doses do not increase its effects, which lowers the risk of misuse. When paired with counseling, MAT significantly improves treatment retention and long-term recovery outcomes compared with medication or counseling alone.
Counseling and Whole-Person Support
Medication is only one part of recovery. Our MAT program integrates individual counseling, group therapy, and dual-diagnosis care for patients living with both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD. Our care team also connects patients with psychiatric rehabilitation (PRP) services, peer support, and community resources — treating the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first visit includes a comprehensive evaluation with one of our psychiatric providers: a review of your substance use history, medical and mental health background, and recovery goals. If MAT is appropriate, we will discuss Suboxone and Sublocade in detail, complete any required screenings, and create a personalized treatment plan that includes medication, counseling, and follow-up visits. Most patients can begin the induction process promptly once cleared by our provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Suboxone and Sublocade?
Both contain buprenorphine, which reduces opioid cravings and withdrawal. Suboxone is a daily sublingual film or tablet (buprenorphine plus naloxone) taken at home. Sublocade is a once-monthly buprenorphine injection given by our clinical staff, providing steady medication levels without daily dosing. Our providers help you choose the option that best fits your needs and lifestyle.
Do I need counseling with MAT?
Yes — counseling is an essential part of our MAT program. Research shows that combining medication with counseling and behavioral therapy leads to better recovery outcomes than either approach alone. We provide integrated individual and group counseling, including dual-diagnosis care for co-occurring mental health conditions.
